2016 sees the launch of two totally new rod ranges from Wychwood - the Truefly T2 series and the flagship RS range – so here’s a closer look at what these rods offer the angler.
The Truefly name has been synonymous with the Wychwood brand for several seasons now but we saw a great opening to expand our rod selection by creating a new range that sits above the existing Truefly rods. The T2 name is an obvious choice – it’s the second tier of Truefly rods – and what it brings to the party is the ease-of-use that its lower priced stablemates offer; blanks that can cope with a variety of casting styles, blanks that are forgiving enough to be used for a massive range of fly fishing situations. Aimed primarily at stillwater techniques, the range covers everything from short-range, small water work right through to hauling on big reservoirs, by the way of seven models that cover 9ft, 9ft 6in and 10ft lengths and line weights between 5-8. A middle-to-tip action offers great line pickup but with the power spread out nicely through the mid-section, these aren’t rods that beginners will struggle with.
Likewise, more experienced casters wont be left wanting. Looks-wise the T2 range has it in spades; a beautiful bottle green blank is finished with silver whippings, giving these rods a real air of luxury without letting you forget that these are modern rods - a carbon reel seat sees to that. Guides are lightweight, high lift snakes with a large, lined stripper guide at the butt. Handles are full cork with composite detailing and are full or half wells depending on model.
Moving onto the RS range, this is where things get really interesting. Power is at the heart of this series of six rods; although not exclusively for experienced casters, these rods really do excel when the user has a more refined casting style that’s able to get the most from the power that’s present through the blank. Whereas the T2 rods have a much more traditional action, the RS series is as close to a typical ‘fast action’ as you can get. That said, the tip is forgiving enough to enable the user to target fish with light tippets, and playing fish can be done with confidence that sharp lunges won’t see the leaders put at risk.
The RS’s flagship credentials are backed-up by a look that really is eye-wateringly beautiful; matt grey Toray carbon blanks are finished with beautiful black and silver whippings, and along with super-light snake guides, the lined PacBay stripper guide and carbon reel seat give these rods a super-premium look and feel.
All RS and T2 rods are now available through Wychwood dealers - check out the dealer locator function to find your local stockist.
